Rolex Datejust 41: 126300 vs 126334, Smooth or Fluted?

Same 41mm case, same calibre 3235. One bezel detail changes the whole character of the watch.

Rolex Datejust 41: 126300 vs 126334, Smooth or Fluted?

The Datejust is Rolex’s most versatile watch, and in 41mm the choice usually comes down to two references: the 126300 with a smooth steel bezel and the 126334 with a fluted white-gold bezel. Here’s what that one detail changes.

Smooth vs fluted

The fluted bezel is the Datejust’s signature: originally functional, used to screw the bezel onto the case, now decorative. Rolex makes it in gold because the fine flutes catch the light and hold their shape. On the 126334 it’s white gold, so it looks like a brighter, more sparkling version of steel. The 126300’s smooth bezel is cleaner and more modern, and it reads more casual and sporty.

Dials

Both come with a wide range of dials: blue, black, silver, slate, green, "Wimbledon" slate with green Roman numerals, fluted motif dials and more. The dial often matters more than the bezel. A blue dial with a fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet is one of the most popular Datejust combinations ever made.

Jubilee or Oyster

The Jubilee is dressier and very comfortable; the Oyster is sportier. The fluted bezel is classically paired with the Jubilee, the smooth bezel often with the Oyster, but every combination exists.

The movement

Both use the calibre 3235 with the Chronergy escapement and around 70 hours of power reserve, certified as a Superlative Chronometer. The date changes instantly at midnight and is magnified by the Cyclops lens.

How they wear

At 41mm the Datejust wears well on most men’s wrists. The fluted bezel makes the watch look slightly smaller and dressier because the eye is drawn to the bezel edge; the smooth bezel makes the dial look a little larger.

Buying checklist

  • Full set. Warranty card and box matter for resale.
  • Fluted bezel. Check the flutes for dents or rounding from polishing.
  • Bracelet stretch. Especially on Jubilee bracelets that have been worn daily.
  • Cyclops. The date should be centred and clearly magnified.
  • Dial. Make sure the dial matches the reference and is original.
