How We Authenticate

Every watch we sell is checked in Los Angeles before it is listed, and again before it ships. Authentication isn’t a single test; it is a series of checks, each of which has to agree with the others. Here is how we do it.

1. Sourcing checks

Authentication starts before a watch reaches us. We buy from established dealers and private owners we can identify, ask for the watch’s history, purchase records and any service paperwork, and decline watches whose story doesn’t hold together.

2. Serial and reference match

We confirm that the serial and reference numbers on the case match each other, match the papers, and are consistent with the model, dial and year being described. Numbers that are worn, re-engraved or inconsistent are a reason to stop.

3. Case and dial inspection under a loupe

We examine the case, bezel, crown, crystal and bracelet under magnification, checking engravings, finishing, fonts and fit against known genuine examples. The dial and hands get the same scrutiny: printing, applied markers, lume and alignment. We look for replaced or refinished parts as well as counterfeits, and we disclose anything that isn’t original.

4. Movement inspection by a watchmaker

Where the watch calls for it, a watchmaker opens the caseback and inspects the movement: calibre, finishing, markings and condition. The movement has to be correct for the reference and consistent with the rest of the watch.

5. Papers verification

We check warranty cards, certificates and boxes against the watch itself: serial, reference, dates and dealer details. Papers support a watch’s identity but never replace a physical inspection, because papers can be lost, swapped or faked too.

6. Timing and water checks

We measure timekeeping and check that the watch winds, sets and runs as it should, including any complications. Where appropriate, we test water resistance, and we tell you the result before you buy.

7. Video on request

Want to see the watch before you commit? We can send a live or recorded video of the exact piece, including close-ups of the dial, case, bracelet and papers, so you can see what we see.

8. Written authenticity guarantee

Every watch we sell comes with our written guarantee that it is authentic. If a watch is ever shown not to be genuine, we will make it right. Ask us for the full terms with your purchase.
