The Royal Oak started the luxury sports watch category. When Audemars Piguet introduced it in 1972, an octagonal steel watch with an integrated bracelet and a price above many gold watches was unheard of. Gérald Genta’s design is now one of the most recognisable in watchmaking, and the family has grown to include time-only models, chronographs and complications. This guide covers the main references and how to tell them apart.

Generation by generation
5402ST: the original
Launched at Basel in 1972, the 5402ST measured 39mm, very large for the time, with an octagonal bezel held by eight hexagonal screws, a tapisserie dial and an integrated bracelet. Inside was the ultra-thin calibre 2121, based on a Jaeger-LeCoultre movement. It earned the “Jumbo” nickname and remains the template for everything that followed.
15202ST and 16202ST: the Jumbo continued
The 15202ST, introduced in 2000, kept the 39mm Extra-Thin format and the calibre 2121, with no seconds hand, only a date. It was made until 2021 and became one of the most coveted steel sports watches of its era. For the Royal Oak’s 50th anniversary, AP replaced it with the 16202ST and the new calibre 7121, which offers a longer power reserve and modern construction in the same slim case.
15300, 15400, 15500, 15510: the everyday Royal Oak
Alongside the Jumbo, AP makes a self-winding Royal Oak with a seconds hand. The 15300ST (2005) used the 39mm case and the calibre 3120. In 2012 the 15400ST grew to 41mm with a larger dial, still with the 3120. In 2019 the 15500ST brought the new calibre 4302, with about 70 hours of power reserve and larger indexes. In 2022 the 15510ST replaced it, with subtle updates to the case, bracelet and dial. The 37mm 15450ST is the smaller sibling.
Chronographs
The 26320ST and 26331ST chronographs used the calibre 2385, with subdials at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock on the 26331. In 2022 AP replaced them with the 26240ST, powered by the in-house integrated flyback calibre 4401, recognisable by its date window between 4 and 5 o’clock.
Beyond steel
The Royal Oak family also includes perpetual calendars, tourbillons, skeletonised models and versions in gold, titanium and ceramic. The Royal Oak Offshore, launched in 1993, is a separate, larger and sportier line, and the Royal Oak Concept is AP’s avant-garde platform.
How to choose
For the purist, the 39mm Jumbo (15202ST or 16202ST) is the closest to Genta’s original and the most elegant. No seconds hand, very thin, and wears beautifully.
For everyday wear, the 41mm 15400ST, 15500ST or 15510ST give you a seconds hand, a more robust feel and good water resistance. The 15500 and 15510 have the longer power reserve of the calibre 4302.
For a smaller wrist, the 37mm 15450ST, or the 39mm 15300ST, wear neatly.
For a chronograph, the 26331ST is the classic three-register look; the 26240ST brings the newer in-house flyback movement.
Dial colour matters as much as reference. Blue is the signature Royal Oak colour, but grey, black, white and green dials all have strong followings.
Living with one
The Royal Oak looks sharp-edged, but it wears comfortably. The integrated bracelet tapers sharply from the case to the clasp, and the links are short, so it hugs the wrist. The 41mm models feel larger than their diameter suggests because of the broad bezel and integrated lugs, while the 39mm Jumbo feels smaller and flatter than you might expect. Try both if you can.
The finishing is the point of a Royal Oak, and it is also its vulnerability. The bezel’s polished bevels and the brushed top surfaces pick up marks, and the sharp edges of the case and bracelet are easy to round off with careless polishing. If you want to keep a Royal Oak looking original, have it serviced by Audemars Piguet or a watchmaker experienced with the model, and ask for minimal refinishing.
Most self-winding Royal Oak models are water resistant to 50m, enough for everyday life and a swim, and the screw-down crown helps. The Jumbo is thinner and more delicate, so many owners treat it as a dress watch with sports-watch looks, and save the 41mm models for active use.
Reading an AP reference is easy once you know the pattern. In 15510ST.OO.1320ST followed by a two-digit suffix, the first part is the model in steel, the middle code describes the steel bracelet, and the suffix identifies the dial. The same reference number can cover several dials, so always confirm the full reference and dial when comparing two watches.
Finally, keep the original box, warranty card and every removed link together. Royal Oak bracelets are expensive to replace, and a complete set makes a real difference when you sell or trade.
Buying checklist
- Match the serial and reference. The case number on the caseback should match the warranty card. Check the full reference, including the dial and bracelet codes.
- Examine the case and bezel finishing. The Royal Oak alternates brushed and polished surfaces with very sharp edges. Over-polishing rounds them off and lowers value significantly.
- Check the bezel screws. The eight hexagonal screws should be aligned and undamaged.
- Inspect the bracelet. The integrated bracelet tapers and is complex to service. Look for stretch, missing links and clasp wear.
- Examine the tapisserie dial under a loupe. The guilloché pattern should be even and crisp, with clean printing.
- Ask about service and papers. A service by Audemars Piguet is a plus. Missing papers affect value.
- Confirm the movement through the caseback. The calibre should match the reference.

FAQ
What is the Royal Oak Jumbo?
The 39mm Extra-Thin Royal Oak, originally the 5402ST, later the 15202ST and now the 16202ST.
What is the difference between the 15500 and 15510?
Both are 41mm with the calibre 4302. The 15510 is the updated version from 2022, with subtle refinements to the case, bracelet and dial.
Is the Royal Oak water resistant?
Yes. Most self-winding Royal Oak models are rated for swimming. Check the rating for your specific reference.
Who designed the Royal Oak?
Gérald Genta, who also designed the Patek Philippe Nautilus a few years later. The Royal Oak was introduced at Basel in 1972.
Why is the dial called tapisserie?
The French word for tapestry. The pattern of small squares is engraved by a guilloché technique, and its size varies by reference: Petite Tapisserie on the Jumbo, larger patterns on the 41mm models.
Royal Oak or Royal Oak Offshore?
The Royal Oak is slimmer and more classic. The Offshore is larger, bolder and sportier.
Can you source a specific dial or metal?
Yes. Tell us the reference and dial and we’ll find it.
