The 116500LN brought the black ceramic bezel to the steel Daytona in 2016 and became one of the most wanted watches of the decade. In 2023, for the Daytona’s 60th anniversary, Rolex replaced it with the 126500LN. At a glance they look nearly identical; in the hand, almost every detail has been refined. This guide walks through every change, how they wear, and what to check before you buy.

A short history
The Cosmograph Daytona was introduced in 1963 as a chronograph for racing drivers, with a tachymeter on the bezel to calculate average speed. For decades it was a niche model; today it is arguably the most recognisable chronograph in the world. In 2000 Rolex gave it the in-house calibre 4130, and in 2016 the 116500LN brought the black Cerachrom bezel to the steel version, echoing the black-bezel Daytonas of the 1960s. The 126500LN arrived in 2023 to mark sixty years of the model.
Every change that matters
The bezel
The quickest tell: the 126500LN frames its ceramic tachymeter insert with a thin edge of Oystersteel, matching the look of the gold and platinum Daytonas. On the 116500LN the black ceramic runs right to the edge of the bezel.
The dial
Rolex reworked the dial’s proportions. The subdial rings are finer, the hour markers slimmer, and the printing slightly refined. Side by side, the 116500LN reads bolder and more graphic; the 126500LN looks lighter and more balanced.
The case
The case and lugs were subtly reshaped for a sleeker profile. It’s easier to notice on the wrist than in photos, and it’s a big part of why the new model feels a little more refined.
4130 vs 4131
The 116500LN uses the calibre 4130, one of the most respected chronograph movements of its generation: a column wheel and vertical clutch, designed with fewer parts than a typical chronograph for reliability. The 126500LN moves to the calibre 4131. It keeps the roughly 72-hour power reserve and the same architecture, but adds Rolex’s Chronergy escapement and new decorative finishing. Think of it as a careful evolution rather than a new engine.
How they wear
Both are 40mm and sit comfortably on most wrists. The Daytona is relatively compact for a chronograph, and the Oyster bracelet with Easylink, a quick extension of about 5mm, keeps it comfortable through the day. The 126500LN’s slimmer case lines make it feel a touch more elegant; the 116500LN feels a touch sportier.
Panda or black?
Both models come with a white dial and black subdials, the "panda", or a black dial with silver-ringed subdials. The panda is the more famous and usually the more requested; the black dial is quieter and looks especially sharp with the black bezel.
Buying checklist
- Box and papers. A full set with the warranty card adds confidence and value. Match the serial to the card.
- Chronograph function. Start, stop and reset should be crisp, and the seconds hand should snap back exactly to 12.
- Bezel. Check the ceramic insert for chips, especially at the edge on the 116500LN, where the ceramic is exposed.
- Pushers and crown. They screw down for water resistance. Threads should engage smoothly.
- Polishing. Original cases keep crisp transitions between brushed and polished surfaces.
- Correct details for the year. Dial, bezel and movement should all match the reference and production period.
Which one to choose
Choose the 116500LN if…

Choose the 126500LN if…
You want the current Daytona with the newest movement and the more refined dial, case and bezel details.
FAQ
How do I tell a 116500LN from a 126500LN quickly?
Look at the bezel: the 126500LN has a thin steel ring around the black ceramic insert. The subdial rings are also finer on the new model.
Is the 126500LN bigger?
No. Both are 40mm; the changes are in proportions and finishing.
Is the 4131 more accurate than the 4130?
Both are certified Superlative Chronometers. The 4131’s changes are about efficiency and finishing rather than a different accuracy standard.
