The Aquanaut is the Nautilus’s more casual sibling: the same rounded-octagon idea, a rubber-like composite strap and an embossed dial that echoes it. The steel 5167A is the classic; the 5168G is the bigger white-gold "Jumbo". Here’s how they compare.

A short history
Patek introduced the Aquanaut in 1997 as a younger, sportier take on the Nautilus case shape, paired with a composite strap that is extremely durable yet comfortable. The 5167A arrived in 2007 and has been the backbone of the line ever since. In 2017 Patek added the 5168G, a larger white-gold model that quickly picked up the "Jumbo" nickname.
Size and metal
The 5167A is 40mm in steel: light, easy and very wearable. The 5168G grows to 42.2mm in white gold, so it’s noticeably bigger and heavier. White gold looks almost identical to steel at a glance but has a slightly warmer, brighter tone in person.
Dial and strap
Both dials carry the Aquanaut’s embossed pattern, the same motif moulded into the strap. The 5167A’s black dial is stealthy and goes with anything. The 5168G came in blue at launch and later in khaki green, both with more colour and depth. The composite straps are soft, waterproof and comfortable in heat, and they’re the reason many owners wear an Aquanaut every day.
The movement
Both use a Patek self-winding calibre with central seconds and date, visible through a sapphire caseback. Depending on the year, you’ll find the 324 S C or the newer 26-330 S C, which adds a stop-seconds function for precise setting. Either is excellent; just make sure the price reflects the year.
How they wear
Like the Nautilus, the Aquanaut wears larger than its diameter because of the integrated strap and broad case. The 5167A suits most wrists and feels relaxed. The 5168G is a statement on smaller wrists and comes into its own on wrists over about 7 inches.
Buying checklist
- Certificate of Origin. A complete Patek set adds confidence and value.
- Strap condition. Composite straps can show wear at the holes and clasp. Replacements are available but should be genuine Patek.
- Calibre and year. Check whether the watch has the 324 S C or 26-330 S C.
- Dial. The embossing should be crisp and even; dials should never be refinished.
- Case finishing. Look for sharp transitions between brushed and polished surfaces.

FAQ

Both are rated to 120 metres, and the composite strap is made for water.
Can I put a 5167A on a bracelet?
There is a steel bracelet version, the 5167/1A, if you prefer metal.
